IEC Registration for Service Exports in India: Complete Guide 2026
Published July 25, 2026
TL;DR
- IEC stands for Import Export Code. It is a 10-digit government-issued number. For pure service exports, DGFT does not require it just to invoice and get paid. You need it to claim Foreign Trade Policy benefits (such as SEIS), generate eBRC, and for some bank or platform setups.
- The government fee is Rs 500, paid once, no renewal charges. Processing takes 1 to 3 working days.
- You apply entirely online at dgft.gov.in. No office visits, no physical documents.
If you are earning from foreign clients and wondering whether you need to register anything, IEC is likely on your list. If you are still choosing between a sole proprietorship, LLP, OPC, or company, start with the business structure guide. Here is everything you need to know about getting an IEC as a service exporter.
What is an IEC?
IEC stands for Importer Exporter Code. It is a 10-digit identification number issued by the DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade), which is under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Think of it as your DGFT identity for international trade. Goods exporters almost always need it. Service exporters need it when they claim FTP benefits, use eBRC, or hit a bank or payment platform that asks for it.
Do Service Exporters Actually Need an IEC?
This is a common point of confusion.
For goods exporters: IEC is mandatory unless you fall under a specific DGFT exemption.
For service exporters: IEC is not legally required just to invoice a foreign client and receive payment. DGFT’s own rule is that for services exports, IEC is not necessary except when you are taking benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy. You also typically need it if you want to:
- Claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy (such as the Service Exports from India Scheme, SEIS)
- Register on the DGFT portal for eBRC (the proof of payment used for many GST refund and incentive workflows)
- Apply for STPI or SEZ benefits
- Satisfy some banks before opening export-purpose or EEFC accounts
- Complete certain payment-platform onboarding steps (for example, Stripe requires IEC for physical goods, and for services when you accept Amex international payments or take FTP benefits)
The practical answer: Get your IEC early if you expect DGFT benefits, eBRC, EEFC, or a platform that asks for it. The Rs 500 cost is negligible. Waiting until a bank or gateway blocks you creates delays exactly when you have a client waiting.
What You Need Before You Apply
- PAN card of the business (individual PAN for sole proprietors, company/LLP PAN otherwise)
- Aadhaar card (for e-sign, if you are a sole proprietor or individual)
- Bank account in the name of the business
- Cancelled cheque or bank certificate showing the account details
- DSC (Digital Signature Certificate): required for companies and LLPs, optional for individuals
How to Apply: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Register on the DGFT portal Go to the DGFT portal and register as an Importer/Exporter. You will need a valid email and mobile number for OTP verification.
Step 2: Log in and navigate to IEC After registration, go to: Dashboard > Services > IEC Profile Management > Apply for IEC.
Step 3: Fill Form ANF-2A This is the IEC application form. It has five parts covering your entity details, bank account information, address, and in the case of companies or LLPs, director/partner information. Fill all sections carefully. The PAN you enter will be cross-verified with the Income Tax database automatically.
Step 4: Upload documents Upload scanned copies of your documents. Files must be in PDF or JPEG format, maximum 5 MB each.
Step 5: Sign the application Sole proprietors and individuals can sign using Aadhaar e-sign (OTP-based). Companies and LLPs must use a DSC.
Step 6: Pay the fee You will be redirected to BharatKosh, the government payment gateway. The fee is Rs 500. You can pay by UPI, net banking, debit card, or credit card.
Step 7: Download your IEC certificate After successful payment and auto-verification, your IEC is typically issued within 1 to 3 working days. Download the QR-coded certificate from your DGFT dashboard.
The Annual Update Rule (Important)
Your IEC has lifetime validity. But there is a catch: you must update your IEC profile every year between April 1 and June 30.
The update is free and takes about five minutes. Log in, verify your details, and submit. If you miss the window, DGFT can deactivate your IEC. A deactivated IEC blocks any export-related government processes until you reactivate it.
Set a calendar reminder for April 1 every year.
IEC Fees Summary
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Government application fee | Rs 500 (one-time) |
| Annual update | Free |
| Modification of existing IEC | Rs 200 |
| DGFT portal usage | Free |
| CA/professional assistance (optional) | Rs 1,500 to Rs 5,000 |
Do not pay more than Rs 500 to the government. Any additional charges go to a CA or agent you hire to help, which is optional.
Common Mistakes
1. Using a third-party website instead of the DGFT portal. The only legitimate place to apply is dgft.gov.in. Third-party sites charge extra fees and submit on your behalf, sometimes with errors. Apply directly.
2. Entering the wrong PAN. The system verifies your PAN with CBDT automatically. A mismatch will reject your application. Double check the PAN before submitting.
3. Missing the annual update. This is the most common reason for IEC deactivation. Put it in your calendar every April.
4. Waiting until you have a large deal. IEC registration is a prerequisite for several other processes (eBRC, DGFT incentives). Start the process before your first big export invoice.
